American Authorities Announce Apprehension in Thwarted New Year's Eve Explosive Plot Close to Southern California

Law enforcement officials announced on Monday that they had effectively disrupted a comprehensive plan to detonate bombs at multiple sites belonging to two US-based businesses on New Year's Eve in the southern part of the state. The move came after the apprehension of individuals part of an radical group advocating for anti-system and anti-government views.

Suspects Taken Into Custody During Remote Dry Run

The four people were detained last Friday in the remote area located east of Los Angeles as they were reportedly practicing their intended operation. Prosecutors displayed aerial reconnaissance images to the media, that depicted the individuals carrying a sizeable dark device to a surface. Authorities noted that the apprehensions occurred ahead of the group could put together a fully functional explosive device.

Names of the Those Charged Made Public

As per the public criminal complaint, the four people identified are Carroll, aged 30; Zachary Aaron Page, 32 years old; Gaffield, 24; and Lai, 41. All four are said to be from the greater Los Angeles area.

Reported Driving Force and Connections

Even though officials did not clearly describe a rationale, they stated the individuals are members of a splinter group called the Turtle Island Liberation Front. This entity according to documents calls for "the working class to revolt and fight back against the capitalist system," as per the court papers.

The charges include conspiracy to commit a crime and having a explosive. Officials indicated that more charges are anticipated in the next few weeks.

Elements of the Alleged "Operation Midnight Sun"

Prosecutors said that one of the accused had drafted a step-by-step plan last month to bomb at least five business locations across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The locations were described as "like Amazon" fulfillment centers.

"The plan was detailed," the attorney said. "It included a precise guide to construct explosive devices … and listed numerous objectives across the county of Orange and Los Angeles."

Based on the probe and the complaint, the plot involved placing backpacks packed with complex IEDs that were set to be exploded at the same time at midnight on New Year's Eve at five sites. New Year's Eve was seen as an perfect time as the scheme indicated "celebratory explosions will be going off at this time so blast noises will be harder to be detected."

An eight-page longhand blueprint, named "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," stated that further sites could be included. The facilities were categorized as property and operations run by two separate companies involved in business related to interstate and foreign commerce.

Future Plots and Evidence Found

The criminal complaint also revealed that two people in the collective had talked about later operations targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and vehicles with pipe bombs in 2026. One suspect according to the complaint noted that such actions "would take some of them out and frighten the rest of them."

Such discussions were allegedly planned both at an in-person meeting in Los Angeles and through an secure digital platform.

Images included in the legal filings depict a desert campsite with what authorities said were bomb-making materials scattered on portable tables.

The complaint notes that the individuals "each brought bomb-making components to the campsite, among them various sizes of plastic pipes, identified as an oxidizer, charcoal, powdered charcoal, powdered sulfur, and components to be used as igniters, among others."

Instructions also included guidance on how to manufacture the devices and how to prevent leaving forensic clues that could be traced back to the group. The accused had in the recent past purchased precursor chemicals and other goods, with acquisitions from major websites.

Apprehension and Subsequent Actions

Authorities took action last week when the individuals were running through the attack in the isolated region near a California town. "They owned every item they needed to make an working IED at that site," an official stated.

As part of executed search warrants, officials reportedly found flyers for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one suspect's home that advocated "Down with America", and "Death to ICE". At another accused's apartment, police found a duplicate of the comprehensive explosives scheme.

Those arrested were detained peacefully. They were scheduled to appear in court in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
