The Battle Royale's Niche Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible During This Update

The game developers has an exciting surprise prepared for the popular battle royale gamers, arriving just in time for festive season. Enthusiasts of this game's super-slick traversal can rejoice to learn that an innovative traversal feature will be introduced when the Amped season goes live on Nov. 4.

Introducing Mantle Boosting

Named "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability gives players a surge of propulsion when climbing over obstacles. As explained lead battle royale designer the design lead, Mantle Boosting was previously existed of Apex Legends for some time, usually referred to as "ledge boosting." But it's no easy feat for the average player, and is mainly used by competitive players in competitive play or tournaments. In this update, the team simplifies the process for everyone to execute these advanced speed-boosts.

"This technique have been in Apex for some time, but executing it isn't easy to perform and gamers might not realize it's possible without external guides," the designer states. "Now including a visual cue so users can easily see the timing to activate the fast-paced traversal skill, making accessible the feature and introducing new ways to compete for more players."

The Reasoning Behind Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

Why make a once niche movement quirk accessible to all players? Principal designer the development lead explains developers aims for players to experience empowerment — even those who are new.

"[The playerbase] is doing other crazy stuff like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we looked around at other games, looked at what our players are doing, and we said, 'How can we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" the designer clarifies. "Since right now, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to access — you need to remap your keybinds and hit precise timings. We proposed, 'What if we create a polished implementation?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is largely the central theme in this season, with characters Horizon, Rampart, and Valkyrie all getting enhancements to help keep them mobile. The cooldown period on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and this skill will boost players into the air faster than before. Rampart's Amped Cover now include a roof and the ability to provide speed boosts to those nearby. But the spotlight is on the high-flying Valkyrie receiving the most attention this season, with various adjustments applied to enhance her as stronger, quicker, and deadlier.

"In my opinion there's quite a consensus that her moment has arrived," states character developer the designer. "Certainly she was top-tier previously, but due to the addition of new Legends, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it felt like she fell behind in today's Apex. It was an ideal chance for us to revisit a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and essentially bring her back to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To restore her competitive status in current strategies, Holstead says the team evaluated each of her abilities and introduced some powerful modifications. Her jetpack received improvements, increasing velocity while airborne, and the jets themselves now recharge three times faster, allowing her to spend more time in the air. She can no longer be harmed from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to mark opponents who take damage from it. Her squad redeploy skill — which lifts her entire squad into the air for repositioning or escape — requires much less time to activate. Additionally, she gains recently added perk choices that players can choose to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her rockets, or accelerate her ultimate takeoff time.

"Her jet pack fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead comments.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the only floating arena, Olympus, is getting a movement-friendly facelift, with an extensive redesign that expands choke points and renders securing elevated positions more manageable. The developers says the game this update is all about giving players the resources required to keep up with the competition.

"Essentially, we examined the game's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," says principal designer the lead.

The battle royale Season 27: Amped releases November 4th at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
