The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
